The Common Sense Diet

Being as we've had a little bit of a heatwave in the UK this weekend many peoples attention has been turned to the upcoming summer and the holidays that come with it. The thought of the summer often strikes fear into people as they don't feel summer ready in terms of their bodies, and the fact of the matter is, there is no such thing as the perfect body and therefore you can't expect to turn into a Greek God/Goddess overnight, you have to work with what you have and look how to make marginal, sustainable improvements over a period of time. However, this post isn't about getting in shape, its about maintaining what you have over the summer, in a period often littered with booze fuelled BBQ's and calorie busting candle-lit dinners overlooking the ocean. For those of you that don't know I spent the summer of 2015 living in Crete, Greece and before I went I was in fairly good shape, relatively shredded and naturally I wanted to maintain that shape for as long as p...

10 Things I Have Learnt Since I Started Training

I have been training for 3 years now and I have learnt an awful lot in that time and what I'm going to do in this article is outline the things that I've learnt along the way, often things that I wish I'd of learnt sooner and I may outline why I wish I wish I'd of learnt them sooner. 1. There are no shortcuts to results. You're not going to put in a week of training and wake up with your dream body. It takes months, often years of hard work, dedication and consistency in every aspect of your training. 2. Getting your diet right is the key to getting results. I could make a bet that 95% of people who train do not know exactly how many calories they are consuming each day, how to measure many calories they are consuming and what items are calorie rich and calorie efficient. 3. In order to burn fat you need to be in a calorie deficit (you need to burn more calories than you consume). 4. By the same measure in order to consistently increase muscle and body mass ...

Staying Motivated To Keep Fit

Do you desperately want to get fit yet when the going gets tough you struggle for motivation? Do you often don't want to train? Do you often want to want to scrap your diet plan? Do you often find yourself reverting back to their old-self. Why is this? It maybe because you have been pushing yourself too hard too soon. What I see lots in my gym is newcomers joining up and absolutely thrashing themselves in the first couple of sessions. I think we've all thought to ourselves 'I'm going to go extra hard here' when trying something new, and that's great first time around as you get to see your strengths and limitations. However, if you continually try to push yourself to the limit and then some, the chances are you will lose interest as you will either be absolutely knackered all the time and therefore not feeling the benefits of keeping fit or you will have DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness) so bad you will be physically incapable of working out. What I'...

Why Do I Train In The Mornings?

When I talk to people about my training, the thing that seems to startle people most is that I train first thing in the morning. What I'm going to do in this article is attempt to explain why I do this. Historically I have never been a morning person, I was the person who would get out of bed at the latest possible moment in order to get somewhere on time but in January 2013 I realised that I was using the excuse 'I don't have time' too often not only in terms of keeping fit but with my work as well. I was right I didn't have time to work out and complete all of my work to a high standard because I would spend the first 3-4 hours of the day procrastinating, thinking about how tired I was and therefore made a change to my lifestyle in order to become more productive. The change was getting my arse up in the morning and train! What I quickly found out is that the hardest part of training in the morning is actually turning up. The 10 seconds between my alarm going ...

Making A Start With Fitness

Being fit is a concept that comes naturally to some people, it even gives them enjoyment. Whilst others struggle to grasp the concept of a training and couldn't think of anything worse than getting up at the crack of dawn to head down to the testosterone fuelled gym to sweat your nuts off and to hear 'Big Al' telling just about anybody who'll listen that he's just set a new bench press PB. But whether you like it or not sooner or later the likelihood is you are going to be told by your partner/friend/doctor that you need to get a little bit fitter; and that thought probably scares the life out of you! Now, the HARDEST part of getting fit is STARTING! This piece of advice can be applied to anything from starting your own business to starting training in order to get fit. The problem with us humans is we live in fear. We fear uncertainty, we fear failure, and therefore we fear trying! I also have a passion for business and I've lost count of the amount of peopl...
